LeBron James’ son Bronny James is stable following a cardiac arrest.

During a practice at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles on Monday, LeBron James Jr., the NBA star’s son, experienced a cardiac arrest. He was taken to the hospital for treatment in the intensive care unit, according to a statement from a spokesman for LeBron James and his wife, Savannah. According to the announcement, Bronny, the younger James, is now stable and out of the intensive care unit.

In a statement, LeBron and Savannah expressed their gratitude and admiration to the USC medical and athletic personnel for their extraordinary efforts and commitment to the safety of its athletes.

According to a department spokesman, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a demand for medical assistance at 9:26 a.m. near the 3400 block of Figueroa Street in Los Angeles, which is the location of the university’s Galen Center sporting complex. Citing federal policy, the government refused to say which individuals need medical assistance.

This September, 18-year-old Bronny James will enroll at USC as a freshman. He is the oldest of the three kids raised by Lakers star LeBron James. Four-star recruit Bronny James choose USC over Oregon and Ohio State.

According to a statement issued in May, the USC men’s basketball team was planning a 10-day exhibition trip to Greece and Croatia starting on August 5. It was unclear whether James would travel or if the team would still go.

A heart attack occurs when blood flow in an artery feeding the heart is interrupted, whereas cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops. Every year, more than 300,000 people have cardiac arrests outside of hospitals.

Only 11.2% of those who experience cardiac arrest and receive bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation survive. Survival increases to 41% for individuals who receive immediate defibrillation. What care James got remained a mystery.

If a person in cardiac arrest goes four to six minutes without CPR, brain damage is likely, and brain death happens after ten minutes. Only 8% of cardiac arrest survivors have successful neurological recovery. Most of them “have some degree of brain injury,” according to Monica Sales, an American Heart Association spokesman, in an interview from January.

Cardiac crises have been successfully managed by USC. The incoming freshman Vincent Iwuchukwu experienced a heart arrest last summer while working out at the Galen Center and was taken to the hospital. Iwuchukwu came back and played in 14 games for the Trojans the previous year.

Florida’s rising talent Keyontae Johnson suffered a heart arrest in the middle of a match in 2020. At Kansas State, where he excelled last season on a team that advanced to the round of 8 of the N.C.A.A. tournament, he eventually recovered and resumed his career. During the June NBA draft, Johnson was chosen by Oklahoma City in the second round.

Few cardiac incidents have been as widely reported as Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest last season, which occurred during a nationally televised football game. Hamlin, who is now making an effort to continue his career with the Buffalo Bills, tweeted his support for James: “Prayers for Bronny and the entire James family.I’m here for you people just like you’ve been for me throughout this whole thing.”

The mother of Kijani Wright, a freshman forward for the Trojans, Montrice Wright, said she hadn’t spoken to her son since James’s breakdown but hoped he and the other players were handling the second similar incident in less than a year.

When you see anything like that, the worry remains, she said. These kids put themselves through so much, and it’s been hot. They also don’t get enough rest.

The University of Washington’s researchers have thoroughly examined cardiac fatalities in N.C.A.A. sports. College basketball players who are Black and male and who are associated with Washington’s Center for Sports Cardiology have a higher risk of sudden cardiac mortality than other players, according to Dr. Kimberly Harmon, the primary author.
