Henry Ruggs NFL Career After Accident: Henry Ruggs III, a former NFL wide receiver, was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison on Wednesday for a November 2021 drunken driving crash that killed a woman and her dog.
Ruggs, 25, was driving at 156 mph with a blood alcohol content twice the legal limit when he crashed into the back of Tina Tintor’s Toyota RAV4 in Las Vegas. Tintor, 23, and her dog were both killed in the crash. Ruggs and his girlfriend, Kiara Kilgo-Washington, were also injured.
Ruggs pleaded guilty to two felony charges in December: DUI resulting in death and reckless driving. He could have faced up to 50 years in prison.
In handing down the sentence, Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez said that Ruggs’ actions were “selfish and senseless” and that he had “shown no remorse for his actions.” She also said that she hoped the sentence would deter others from driving drunk.
Ruggs’ lawyers had argued for a shorter sentence, saying that he was a young man who made a mistake and that he had already suffered as a result of the crash. They also said that he was unlikely to reoffend.
Ruggs is the first NFL player to be sentenced to prison for a DUI crash that resulted in a death. His case has raised questions about the NFL’s handling of player discipline and the dangers of drunk driving.
Ruggs was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was considered one of the top receivers in the draft and was expected to have a bright future in the NFL. However, his career was cut short by the crash.
Ruggs is eligible for parole after serving three years in prison. He will also be required to pay restitution to Tintor’s family and to complete a substance abuse treatment program.
