As part of larger talks to put an end to Russia’s invasion, negotiations have been going on for days over an agreement that might give the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals and involve the US in a reconstruction fund for Ukraine.
After “everything unacceptable was taken out of the text, and it is now more clearly spelled out how this agreement will contribute to Ukraine’s security and peace,” the Ukrainian official claimed the terms were agreed upon.
The agreement’s specifics are unknown at this time, but a significant bone of contention had been Zelensky’s earlier rejection of the Trump administration’s demand for a $500 billion share of Ukraine’s rare earths and other minerals in return for the aid the US had already given Kyiv.
Whether the terms of a deal have been agreed upon has not been confirmed by the United States.
“I’ve been informed that Zelensky will arrive on Friday. I would be more than happy to have him sign it alongside me if he so chooses. From the Oval Office on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump stated, “And I understand that’s a big deal, very big deal.”
Trump responded, “$350 billion and lots of equipment, military equipment, and the right to fight on,” when asked what Ukraine would get out of the mining agreement.
Trump informed reporters that “we’ll be looking to” future security for Ukraine “later on,” saying, “We’ve pretty much negotiated our deal on rare earth and various other things.”
Trump stated, “I don’t think that’s going to be an issue.” “I discussed it with Russia. They appeared unconcerned about it. Thus, I believe they comprehend. They won’t return once we’ve taken this action.
Ukraine has been demanding security assurances, with Kyiv eager to see both the recovery of lost territory and defense against a potential Russian invasion in the future.
European officials have also emphasized that any future peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv must include security assurances for Ukraine. After meeting with Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday suggested strengthening Ukraine’s military and, upon request, sending French and British troops to maintain the peace.
A US “backstop” is required for any peace agreement, including Ukraine, according to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who will be visiting the White House on Thursday. This “backstop” may involve heavy lift transportation, security assurances, American intelligence collaboration, and air support.
The same source said that the Americans had opposed the inclusion of security guarantees in the draft, which prompted news of an accord.
The most recent draft’s exact language pertaining to Ukraine’s security was unclear.
According to a Ukrainian source involved with the negotiations, it said Monday that the US and Ukrainian presidents may meet in person to discuss the security guarantees and that some of the more difficult aspects of the resource deal will be worked out in later discussions.
Over the weekend, a source told that Zelensky was unable to accept a previous version of the agreement because it did not include any “obligations” on the part of the United States, while Ukraine was “expected to provide everything.”
There have been indications since then that the two leaders are getting closer to reaching a consensus.
Macron praised Trump for his “decision to work with President Zelensky and to conclude this agreement that’s so important for the US and Ukraine on rare earths, critical minerals” during a Monday visit to the White House.
According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia has been launching airstrikes on the country, launching at least 177 drones overnight into Wednesday. The air force said that 110 of these were shot down and 66 failed to reach their targets.
Ukrainian officials reported on Wednesday that the nighttime attacks claimed the lives of at least seven individuals, including two in the Kyiv region.
